Customer Dissatisfaction (another POV)
Sunday, March 23, 2003

I can just hear the conversation between the Office Depot floor manager and sales associate as I leave the store.

Manager: "Man, I *hate* that guy. Everytime he comes in, he's nothing but trouble."

Sales Guy: "Oh yeah, how come? What did he do before?"

Manager: "Several months ago, we had a buy-one-get-one-free promotion for Colorifics colored pencils/crayons. He ended up buying something like 200 boxes worth. Said it was for a school or something. So we spent quite some time trying to find all the boxes we could for him."

Sales Guy: "Yeah, but if that's what the promotion was for...and he paid for it, right?"

Manager: "Yeah, I suppose he did, but then he had the gaul to say that he needed only 20 boxes on each receipt, so we spent a long time ringing up a bunch of separate transactions."

Sales Guy: "Geez, that probably was a huge pain I'd imagine."

Manager: "It sure was. And the promotion was vague, it could've been read as get a box of crayons/colored pencils free with any transaction, not buy one box, get one free. So he belabored that point repeatedly that it never said one box per transaction. And since then, he's been here to pick up different orders he placed online for store pick-up."

Sales Guy: "But isn't that part of our store policy? Isn't that part of the deal with our online store?"

Manager: "Yeah, but the prices he pays seem very suspect. Just last week he was here picking up two shredders he paid <$5 for. Which we normally sell for $80. And a few days after that he was here picking up a wireless router he only paid $20 for."

Sales Guy: "Do you think he's hacking our system or something? Are his deals legit?"

Manager: "I think he's ok - but he just seems to take advantage of our deals when we have these special promotions."

Sales Guy: "Like tonight..."

Manager: "Yeah, like tonight. I mean, who the hell thinks of these things? Sure the promotion was buy $20 worth of pens and get a $20 gift card, but who thinks of using that $20 gift card and buying another $20 worth of pens just to get another gift card? And then he pays for the original transaction with a gift card. Geez, it's enough to drive you crazy, people like him."

Sales Guy: "Yeah, but if he's playing by the rules..."

Manager: "Still, he's nothing but trouble anytime he walks into the store. Just be warned."

Needless to say, I think I better steer clear of that store for a while. I think I'll go harass another Office Depot manager with my deals for a while. Good thing we have 3 stores in the area. :D
