How many TVs do *YOU* have?
Tuesday, April 23, 2002

I absolutely was *not* going to bring this up again, especially since I feel like I've already made my feelings PREE-TY clear on this topic, but since it was both mentioned in today's local paper and on a morning radio talk show I was listening to on the way to work....

[Feel free to skip a few paragraphs if so inclined - I won't be offended.  :)]

Today's morning poll on the particular radio station I was listening to:  "How many TVs are in your household?"  Today's local newspaper headline in the "Style" section:  "Glued to the Tube".  Now it's entirely possible that the newspaper article spawned the topic of discussion on the radio show, but I can't be certain for sure.  But it sure was coincidental both were talking about nearly the same thing.  Can you believe the average number of TVs owned reported on the radio show was somewhere around 8???  Now that number seems a bit high, but I believe they were asking about both working & non-working TVs.  Still...they reported that the national average was something like 4 or 5.  And the newspaper article refers to an article in the February issue of Scientific American that indicates the criteria for drug addiction can also apply to those ppl that watch too much TV.

Now the article doesn't say watching TV is problematic per se, just that watching *too much* TV can be unhealthy (as with anything else).  I can hardly believe a household owning 5 TVs, much less 8.  But then again, I've read & heard time & time again of ppl who have a TV in every major room, plus their children all have TVs (not to mention various assorted video game systems).  Still a pretty amazing statistic to me.  With all these TVs everyone supposedly owns, and the access to nearly a bazillion stations via cable/satellite, it's amazing ppl even leave their homes at all....hehe.

Even though I wasn't feeling much like it, my biking buddy from church called me up & asked if I was thinking about riding tonight.  End result:  add another 19.2 miles to my 2002 biking log.  :)  Again, rode at a pretty average pace (~11 mph), but it was nice to ride & chat at the same time.  Plus the weather here finally cooled down a bit so it was perfect temps for riding tonight.

My ArcView class went well today - it's been an informative and useful class so far.  I can already see applications of ArcView that we will be able to use in future projects.  Plus even though I have projects that absolutely need to be finished, it's nice to get a break from the usual workday of sitting in front of my computer running & troubleshooting computer models.  :)  Most of the time I really enjoy my job, but it does get somewhat tedious at times.

Tomorrow's schedule:

  • Intro to ArcView 8.1 Part 2
  • Sherwood Table Tennis Club (hopefully)
