Domesticated Husband

For those eagerly awaiting the sequel to Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire, I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  J. K. Rowling, the author of the popular children's series, announced today that she's running behind schedule, and that the writing has proven to be "more involved than she expected."  Her publisher told shareholders that they hope to release the next book, Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix, by June 2003 at the latest.  The full article can be found here.

What do I think?  I think that it's great that she's taking time to do it "right."  More power to her.  I'm not ragging on the guy who does the popular Goosebumps series, but I can hardly believe you can write "quality" books by pumping them out monthly.  Even though kids will be sorely disappointed with the delay in her 5th book, I would rather see her delay it and write a quality book rather than try to pump them out as fast as she can to appease the public and her publisher.

Gotta love Jen - she's watching the original Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) as I'm writing this Entry.  What guy could resist a woman that actually wanted to watch a movie full of car chases out of her own volition?  Hehe.  It supposedly has the longest car-chase scene in any movie ever made (40min long).  I was just commenting on the bad hair & even worse clothing of the early 70s.  Of course every generation at the time thinks their clothing is hip and happening.  I wonder what people will think of our looks & style thirty years from now?  I mean, for once..people seem to dress pretty normal & look fairly normal as a whole...but of course that's what we think *NOW*.  Wonder if in thirty years we look back & think we were all smoking something.  Hehe.

Had a wonderful day yesterday with the kids at the "Mike Huckabee" Delta Rivers Nature Center.  (For those unfamiliar with Arkansas politics, Mike Huckabee is our governor).  Anyway, it was hard to miss his "influence" at the nature center as his name was plastered everywhere you looked.  It was definitely worth the 45min drive out there - however, it was a shame Jen didn't get a chance to come with us, but she *did* manage to get a lot of work done while we were gone.  At the visitor's center, they had a pond out back with glass sides so visitors could actually see the fish swimming around in the pond.  They had stocked the pond with native fish found in that part of Arkansas - mostly catfish, different species of gar, and other game fish whose name I am unfamiliar with (Dammit Jim, I'm a hydrologist, not a ichtyologist!

Biggest fish in the pond:  a 4' long, 1' wide catfish (not a fish story either!)
Strangest looking fish:  a paddlefish - check it out.  Looks like a combination of a platypus and a shark.  Hehe.

Kids loved the nature center, but today Ariel broke the stone butterfly necklace she bought at the gift shop.  She claims "she didn't mean to do it" but I guess she wanted to test the tensile strength of the pendant.  Kids...you just gotta love 'em even when they do stupid, irrational (why-the-heck-did-you-do-that???) things.

I was commenting to a good friend of mine today how domesticated I felt this weekend.  Hehe.  Not only did I take the kids for most of the day yesterday, I fixed dinner tonight, replaced the broken belt on the vacuum cleaner and vacuumed, and also swept & mopped the bathroom floors.  (Ladies, I'm still *not* available, sorry.  Hehe).  Yep...she has me well-trained...hehe.  (J/K hon!)

On a manly note, I did manage to get out & ride about 8.9 miles tonight after paying a visit to my Co-worker Buddy.  Since I was sort of pressed for time (mostly wanted to get home before it got extremely late), decided to make it a high-impact ride so I tried to ride at about 80% of maximum effort - ending up averaging 15.7mph (all-time high) over 33 minutes.  :)

Start of the work week again tomorrow - *sigh*

miles biked so far this year:  137.3
